Country: Australia
Client: The Department of Education
Architect: HASSELL
Builder: Perkins Builders

With its striking design and location sensitive material selection, Dalyellup College imparts a strong aesthetic presence on the local area of Bunbury in Western Australia. Due to the school's ribbon-like building design, it demanded a high quality building material made for Australian conditions and backed by a strong warranty, which could be used on both the roofing and walling.

HASSELL, the architects behind Dalyellup College, decided to employ the flexibility and durability of roofing and walling made from ZINCALUME® steel and COLORBOND® steel to achieve the challenging aesthetic of the building design. LYSAGHT SPANDEK® steel made from ZINCALUME® steel and COLORBOND® steel in the colour Shale Grey™ creates a simple skillion roof in broad sweeps without the need to fill in the walls. The final result is the same building material folding over from the roof and flowing down as wall cladding.

"The use of LYSAGHT SPANDEK® steel roofing and wall cladding made from ZINCALUME® steel helped us emphasise a continuous and flowing element, winding amongst the existing mature trees that were retained on site," said HASSELL principal, David Gulland.

"The lightness and economy of the material, combined with the clean lines of the SPANDEK® profile, provided us with strong textural counterpoint to other base elements of the design."

The project's builders, Perkins Builders, also advocated the selection of LYSAGHT SPANDEK® steel made from ZINCALUME® steel due to the product's numerous benefits.

"The selection of sheeting made from ZINCALUME® steel was due to its reliability of supply, ease-of-use, speed of installation and, most importantly, for the strength and dependability of BlueScope Steel's warranty," said Perkins Builders' south west general manager, Clinton Wood.

In a testament to the quality of the completed project, The Department of Education praised the efforts of both the architects and builders in achieving the school's dynamic aesthetics.

"The selection of this product by the architects has provided the desired outcomes for the presentation of Dalyellup College as an exciting, state-of-the-art place for learning," said Department of Education principal consultant, Ros Marsland.
