A large prestige home under construction in Melbourne has opened a window for its occupants on the natural beauty of adjacent Heritage listed bushland populated by koalas and kangaroos.

The 52 square four bedroom family home is situated on three acres of land in Warrandyte South. Its design features two large open areas, one incorporating the living and dining room and the other taking in the kitchen and formal area.

The open plan design was optimised by using purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel for structural framing under the floor and in the roof. The purlins increase the structural strength of the home and maximise its living area by limiting the number of walls.

"My aim was to create an open house with inherent strength," owner Tim Suke said.

"Termites are a problem in this area too, so purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel were ideal for our house."

The decision to use purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel also created significant savings in construction costs. Project Manager Paul Horne of On the Level Building Services said his client had saved about 30 percent in labour and material costs compared to using alternative materials.

It was the first time Mr Horne had worked with the purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel, which he sourced from metal rollformer Stramit Building Products.

The J235-15 floor purlins are purpose designed by Stramit Building Products using Z350 coated GALVASPAN® steel.

"The purlins are completely level with no variance whatsoever - the flooring has come together effortlessly," Mr Horne said .

The BlueScope Steel made high tensile steel strip at the core of GALVASPAN® steel ensures that purlins and girts are of the highest strength and quality to achieve a strength to weight ratio 60 percent greater than traditional hot rolled steel purlins.

Construction of the home - which will also feature roofing and walling made from ZINCALUME® steel developed by BlueScope Steel - is scheduled for completion by Christmas.
