Queensland specialist formworker EMS Constructions has developed an improved formwork process that has saved substantial money by reducing time and labour costs. This process played a major role in the fast-track construction of the Westfield multi-cinema complex at Chermside in Brisbane, Australia.
The new Westfield multi-cinema complex at Chermside shopping centre on Brisbane's northside was part of a A$235 million redevelopment of the centre.
Construction of the 16 cinemas in the project was finished months ahead of schedule.
The EMS formwork process benefited Westfield by enabling the company to complete the fit-out of the cinemas earlier than projected and open to the public well ahead of schedule.
LYSAGHT BONDEK® structural steel formwork played a major role in the fast-track cinema construction.
EMS Constructions' use of the process has evolved and been improved through the construction of multiplex cinema sites for Westfield at Garden City and Indooroopilly, providing significant savings in material and labour costs.
"LYSAGHT BONDEK® is very fast and efficient to install because it arrives on site in pre-cut lengths to suit the specific application," said EMS Constructions manager Mr Jeff Bedsor.
"It is a significant time and money saver because it eliminates the time-consuming process of installing and then removing formwork."
EMS Constructions began using LYSAGHT BONDEK® during construction of a waste transfer station 11 years ago.
Its crews have become specialists in LYSAGHT BONDEK® construction and carry out all work 'in house'. This includes the use of specialised plasma cutters to minimise noise and sparks in the workplace and to increase speed when trimming LYSAGHT BONDEK®.
LYSAGHT BONDEK® is a high-strength zinc-coated steel composite which acts both as permanent formwork and positive tensile reinforcement in one-way reinforced suspended concrete construction.
It is suited to most types of construction, ranging from high-rise to load-bearing brickwork used in home units, cottages, hospitals, hotels and other commercial and residential applications.
Panels are rollformed from zinc-plated steel in 0.6, 0.75 and 1.0 millimetre thicknesses to AS 1397 G550 Z200 specifications.
LYSAGHT BONDEK® rib interlocking sheets provide an effective cover width of approximately 600 millimetre, with lengths custom cut to project requirements.
EMS Constructions has been involved in high profile Queensland projects such as The Riverside Centre, the Myer Centre in the CBD, Chermside shopping centre, the redevelopment of the Garden City centre at Mt Gravatt, Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast and Brisbane's Treasury Casino.
It also did the formwork for the Grand Mariner apartments on the Gold Coast and Brisbane airport's domestic terminal.
