More than 21,000 square metres of steel cover the massive new Visy Pulp and Paper mill in Tumut in southern NSW. LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® corrugated steel wall cladding and LYSAGHT INTEGRITY® roofing in ZINCALUME® steel clad the A$400 million mill that produces the kraft paper used in cardboard manufacture.
One of the newest and most technologically advanced paper mills in the world, it has been clad in steel to make it resemble an Australian icon - the Aussie shearing shed.
Visy Pulp & Paper management selected ZINCALUME® steel to give the paper mill a classic Australian shearing shed look.
The company's contract administrator, Brett McClellan, said LYSAGHT® roofing and cladding products were the most appropriate and economical option for such a vast project.
The Visy plant produces around 700 tonnes of paper product a day and employs 150 people full-time.
Its ecologically friendly facilities recycle waste water for irrigation of the mill's 1100 hectare site.
Eighty percent of the wood used by the paper mill comes from plantation forests and the remainder from recycled cardboard product.
Architect Michael Hund from Melbourne-based Woodhead International said the mill's shearing shed reference was in keeping with other structures in the rural district.
This, coupled with sensitive landscaping, will ensure that it blends with the environment.
Its roof is covered by more than 10,000 square metres of LYSAGHT INTEGRITY® roof sheeting.
Meredith Roof Plumbing also installed approximately 11,000 square metres of LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® steel wall cladding.
Managing Director, Darren Meredith, said the massive building was the biggest project the Lavington-based company had ever completed, but that the LYSAGHT INTEGRITY® steel roofing had proved extremely easy to lay.
