One of Sydney's major shopping centres is in the midst of a A$350 million redevelopment which will double its retail area to almost 100,000 square metres and create a new landmark retail destination in Sydney's Greater West.

The redevelopment of Westpoint Blacktown by builder Baulderstone Hornibrook includes the demolition and refurbishment of existing retail buildings and carpark, construction of a bus tunnel and construction of major new retail, entertainment and leisure precincts and carpark.

BlueScope Lysaght cladding in stylish LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® profile has been used for prominent sections of the new centre's roof.

Architect Anthony Palamara, leader of The Buchan Group's Sydney project design team, selected BlueScope Lysaght products based on several primary criteria.

"In the areas that were visible to the public our preference was the classic profile of LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305®, giving the impression of a zinc like form without the associated cost," he said.

"This profile also enabled us to crimp the sheeting in the circular roof form to avoid a faceting of the panels. For the large non-visible areas the builder wanted to ensure a cost efficient profile was used, so the concealed fixing system and proven long term durability of LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK 700 HI-STRENGTH® was the preferred system. We were impressed with the co-operation of the BlueScope Lysaght technical personnel during project development stages."

Due for completion in June 2006, the Westpoint project is so large that at some stages up to 2,000 workers have been on site.

Highly experienced contractor Axis Metal Roofing Pty Ltd accounted for just 30 of that total, but has played a major role in the shopping centre's refurbishment and expansion.

Nearly 10,000 square metres of LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® was used.
The company has fixed more than 26,000 square metres of roof cladding supplied by BlueScope Lysaght including LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305®, LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK 700 HI-STRENGTH® and LYSAGHT TRIMDEK® profiles.

"This hasn't been the largest job we've handled, but in terms of the number of elements involved it has certainly been among the most challenging," Axis Metal Roofing director, Hugh Tabone, said.

"The cladding involved 40 separate areas which each had their own characteristics. Some roof areas are almost completely hidden from view, while others can be seen from the centre's carpark and from surrounding buildings."

LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® profile was selected to clad the more prominent roof sections throughout the complex, with nearly 10,000 square metres of LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® profile in Shale Grey™ COLORBOND® steel used to clad awnings and covered walkways.

A further 1,000 square metres of LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® profile in COLORBOND® Metallic steel covers the restaurant and food court areas.

"Architects seem to like the LONGLINE 305® profile because it has a classy look that distinguishes it from other steel cladding profiles," Hugh Tabone said. "For the Westpoint project at Blacktown it certainly suits the areas for which it has been specified. From a roofing contractor's perspective it's also a good profile to work with."

LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® profile is a strong and durable, concealed-fixed roofing and wall cladding suitable for roofing with a pitch as low as one degree.

Its smart lines are created by narrow ribs and smooth pans. The distinctive profile adds interest to large areas by casting shadows which change throughout daylight hours.

Fixing is performed by the use of simple clips which are screwed to purlins. Watertight results are achieved because the clip method of fixing ensures that there are no holes to penetrate the sheet.

"There was a lot involved in this project and it required total co-operation from all parties," Hugh Tabone said. "Our work at Westpoint Blacktown began in October 2004."

"Because the existing shopping centre has continued to operate throughout that time, the supply of the roof cladding involved deliveries at night and on weekends.

"Storage limitations and access difficulties also meant that material had to be delivered pretty much as it was needed."

Mr Tabone said that BlueScope Lysaght's ‘Big Rig' delivery trailer had been put to good use delivering long lengths of LONGLINE 305® and KLIP-LOK 700 HI-STRENGTH® cladding.

The specially developed trailer enables BlueScope Lysaght to deliver its vast range of steel building products in lengths up to 40 metres.

In many cases this enables roofing contractors such as Axis Metal Roofing to span roof areas with single unjoined lengths of cladding. This provides the twin benefits of outstanding watertightness and the best possible appearance.
