When Jeff Horgan, Managing Director of regional Victorian company, Interline Roofing Ballarat Pty Ltd, saw the plans for the Swan Hill campus of the Sunraysia TAFE college, he had more than a professional interest in the project.
The Swan Hill campus is the newest off shoot of the four Sunraysia TAFE satellites which service the continuing education needs of North West Victoria. The other sites are located at Mildura, Robinvale and Ouyen.
"When we first saw the plans and the detail of the walling and roof cladding requirements it wasn't immediately obvious what the finished buildings would look like," Jeff Horgan said.
"The design wasn't particularly challenging for our tradesmen, but the colour scheme selected by the architects for the walls and roof cladding had us intrigued. It was only when the job was completed and the landscaping was in place that the rhythm of the colours fully emerged."
Interline Roofing Ballarat won the contract to provide roof and wall cladding for significant sections of the recently completed Swan Hill TAFE project on the strength of its ability to commit to the job at short notice.
"When the opportunity arose we had the experienced staff and the assurance of our supplier, BlueScope Lysaght, that they could deliver the roofing and wall cladding in the time we specified," Jeff Horgan said.
LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® profile was specified for the campus building roofs, applied in a sequence of COLORBOND® steel in the colours Windspray®, Headland® and Pale Eucalypt®. The walls of the single storey buildings were specified in multiple brick colours echoed by panels of wall cladding.
The bold profile of LYSAGHT SPANDEK® cladding was selected for much of the exterior of the silo-like structure which dominates the campus administrative office at its entrance.
Perforated sheeting in LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® profile in the colour Surfmist® was also used for acoustic control in teaching area ceilings.
"BlueScope Lysaght provided us with first rate delivery service for the TAFE project," Jeff Horgan said.
"Our requirements were not nearly as straightforward as you would find on many jobs, but they delivered the colours and profiles to site in the quantities we required and in the sizes which simplified our cladding task.
Interline Roofing's fixers were operating 300 kilometres away from the company's base, so the smooth running of the cladding task was even more important than usual.
"When you consider the sequencing of colours which had to be followed with the wall and roof cladding it all went remarkably smoothly", Jeff Horgan said.
"For the wall cladding we had what seemed an almost random sequence of sheet colours and then the need to provide flashing all around each window. In 27 years working in this industry the Swan Hill TAFE would definitely be one of the more interesting projects with which we have been involved."
"Because we have assembled a skilled workforce and have the support of a reliable supplier of quality products such as BlueScope Lysaght, we have the confidence to take on this type of work. I think the finished result has provided a lot of satisfaction to everyone involved."
