Tie Down a Steel Frame to a Concrete Slab

Anchor Selection

Ensure the correct tie-down fastener has been chosen for the job. The most common tie-down methods are listed below.

Position of Anchor

Tie-down fasteners must be fixed beside jamb studs, at brace points and a minimum of every second stud. All fasteners shall be a maximum 45mm from the stud face in all cases. On external walls, tie-down shall be a minimum 60mm in from the edge of the slab.

Hand Driven Concrete Nail
A 38mm minimum hand-driven concrete nail with Dia 16x1.5mm washer through the bottom plate.

Powder Actuated Fastener (PAF)
32mm PAF's are fixed directly through the bottom plate into the concrete using a PAF gun.

Expandable Anchor (not pictured) When using expandable anchors such as a Dynabolt, insert in a pre-drilled hole and tap home with a hammer. Tighten the anchor nut to force the expansion wedges against the sides of the hole securing it in position.
