Roof Drainage System Design
Roof drainage systems should be designed and detailed by a suitably qualified trade or professional in accordance with the BCA and the Australian Standards. Particular reference should be made to the correct sizing of gutter; sizing, quantity and placement of downpipes; and the provision of appropriate overflow devices. For guidance on Design of Drainage and Gutter Fall Download Using LYSAGHT® Roofing & Walling - Chapter 6 Roof Drainage (407 KB).
Fall
Install gutters with a generous fall to avoid ponding (which reduces
gutter life), but the fall should not be so steep as the be obvious to
the casual observer. Fall on house guttering is often about 1:250 (12mm
in 3000mm), though a steeper fall of 30:3000 should give the gutter a
longer life.
Downpipe Design
The downpipe size and spacing should be determined in accordance with
AS/NZ3500.3.2:1998 National plumbing and drainage: Part 3.2: Stormwater
drainage - Acceptable solutions.
