Roof Drainage System Design

Roof drainage systems should be designed and detailed by a suitably qualified trade or professional in accordance with the BCA and the Australian Standards. Particular reference should be made to the correct sizing of gutter; sizing, quantity and placement of downpipes; and the provision of appropriate overflow devices. For guidance on Design of Drainage and Gutter Fall Download Using LYSAGHT® Roofing & Walling - Chapter 6 Roof Drainage (407 KB).

Fall
Install gutters with a generous fall to avoid ponding (which reduces gutter life), but the fall should not be so steep as the be obvious to the casual observer. Fall on house guttering is often about 1:250 (12mm in 3000mm), though a steeper fall of 30:3000 should give the gutter a longer life.

Downpipe Design
The downpipe size and spacing should be determined in accordance with AS/NZ3500.3.2:1998 National plumbing and drainage: Part 3.2: Stormwater drainage - Acceptable solutions.

Adverse Conditions

Metal & Timber Compatibility
Lead, copper, bare steel and green or some chemically treated timber are not compatible with this product; thus don’t allow any contact of the product with those materials, nor discharge of rainwater from them onto the product. If there are doubts about the compatibility of other products being used, ask for advice from our information line.

Sealed Joints
For sealed joints use screws or rivets and neutral cure silicone sealant branded as suitable for use with galvanised or COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel.

Maintenance
Areas not cleaned by natural rainfall should be washed down every six months.

Clean Up
Remove all plastic cover strips from product and dispose of correctly. Sweep all metallic swarf and other debris from roof areas and gutters at the end of each day and at the completion of the installation. Failure to do so can lead to surface staining when the metal particles rust.
