'Towards a Greener Supply Chain for Australian Steel'

The Steel Stewardship Forum has been established to bring together all of the participants in the Australian Steel Supply Chain with a view to achieving sustainability improvements across the whole chain.

Today sees the launch of the Forum's website www.steelstewardship.com an important step in communicating to Australian steel users, information on the Forum and the progress it is making.

An early initiative of the Forum is the development of a certification scheme for Australian steel. To be known as 'Responsible Steel', it will extend from mining through manufacture, fabrication and use, to final disassembly and reuse or recycling. Responsible Steel will provide specifiers and purchasers with clear and transparent sustainability credentials for steel suppliers in Australia.

In parallel with the 'Responsible Steel' certification scheme, the Forum is developing a high level input output map of the complete Australian Steel Supply Chain, based on member's data including Life Cycle Inventory data. This project will help focus efforts and create the first map of the flows in the chain.

The Forum acknowledges the financial support of the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, New South Wales Government Office of Environment and Heritage and the Victorian Government 's Sustainability Victoria, without whom this important work could not have been undertaken.
