Energy Efficiency provisions for housing have been introduced to the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and are gradually becoming mandatory in each state. The COLORBOND® steel Energy Efficiency Guide has been developed to simplify the process of understanding and complying with the new BCA requirements for any location in Australia. Home Follows The Sun And Wins Six Building Awards

A south facing two bedroom home built on the edge of the Swan River has taken out six Housing Industry Association building awards, including awards for energy efficiency. The award winning Perth residence overcame several challenges including a steeply sloping in sandy riverbank soil and the southward orientation of the house with respect to the river views. 4. Pavilions In The Hills For Unique B&B

A South Australian couple has developed a contemporary Australian bed and breakfast featuring three architecturally designed 'Pavilions' that sit discreetly in native bushland. The pavilions, which sit near some of South Australia's premier wine producing sites, restaurants and golf courses, have already won a number of tourism and industry awards including a Highly Commended New Tourism Development in the Yellow Pages Tourism Awards. 5. Logo Saves Cans From The Tip

Every year Australians send scores of steel cans to the tip, wasting a product that can be recycled. Now a new logo developed by the Steel Can Recycling Council of Australia for display on the labels of all types of recyclable steel cans is helping to conserve resources and protect the environment. The Recyclable Steel logo, designed to give consumers confidence in the product’s recyclability, is already receiving praise from consumers, associated companies and product associations. 6 . Innovative Design Gives Solar Heating Aesthetic Appeal

The University of South Australia, in collaboration with government and industry partners, has developed a revolutionary, environmentally friendly heating system that sits discreetly on any steel roof. The solar air heating system can be easily integrated into new roofs or installed during re-roofing of older homes. For more information about this new solar heating system, go to:

7. Modern Steel Bridge Complements Historical 1900’s Landmark

High strength 400 grade XLERPLATE® hot rolled steel from BHP Steel was recently used in the construction of a new single arch steel bridge over Enoggera Creek in the north-west Brisbane suburb of The Gap. A key design requirement for Brisbane City Council was that the new bridge complement the visual appeal of the existing historically significant bridge. Discover how XLERPLATE® steel helped meet this requirement:

8. Critical Applications Depend On Consistent XLERPLATE® Quality

Look to the skyline of most major cities in the world and there is every chance you will notice an Australian made Favelle Favco crane working on top of a construction site. For over 30 years, Favelle Favco has been at the leading edge of high-rise construction with cranes ranging from 60 metre tonnes up to 1800 metre tonnes. To see how BHP Steel has helped Favelle Favco maintain this ongoing success read on:

9. Did You Know...

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is cows. Did you know:

  • Archaeological evidence indicates that Britons were milking cows at least 5,000 years ago.
  • There are an estimated 920 different breeds of cows in the world
  • It is possible to lead a cow upstairs but not downstairs, because a cow's knees cannot bend properly in order to walk back down
  • Cows can sleep standing up.
  • Old cows in India have their own nursing homes
