2. 2007 LYSAGHT® Scholarship Winner

A young Sydney architect focused on developing new, integrated strategies to improve urban water management has been awarded the 2007 LYSAGHT® Research Scholarship. Tse-Hui Teh was awarded the scholarship from a strong field of candidates for her proposal "Hydro-Urbanism: Tactics and Strategies for an Urban Future of a Distributed Water-Cycle Infrastructure". 3. Centenary Square Is A Low-Rise Trend Setter For Brisbane

The new Centenary Square project in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley is attracting wide interest because of a floorplate size that's one of the largest available in Brisbane. This design and construct project by builder Laing O'Rourke is located on the Brisbane Central Business District fringe and adds a new office building of 10,000 square metres with additional ground floor retail of 1,663 square metres. 4. Home Among The Gumtrees

When a New South Wales, South Coast couple found the large block of land that suited their needs for a family home in the hills below the Illawarra Escarpment, it was all about the views. The couple's architect achieved the desired outcome by designing an open plan, pavilion style home with external wall areas consisting almost entirely of glass, including 31 largely glass doors. Queensland architect Eddie Codd's fascination with steel cladding began during his earliest days in the profession and 45 years later shows no signs of diminishing. In fact he's just about to build a new home for himself in the hinterland that will utilise the design flexibility of the products which he enthusiastically admires. [Read more]


6. Fast Facts...
  • The first Christmas stamp issued by Australia Post was in 1957. Australia was the first Commonwealth country to begin regularly issuing Christmas stamps and has since issued more than 100 designs.
  • The first Australian Christmas card was produced in 1881 by John Sands. The designs were the result of a national competition and appeared on the 1983 Australia Christmas stamp.
  • Christmas trees become popular in the UK from 1841 when Prince Albert erected a tree in Windsor Castle following a German tradition. Fir trees have been decorated at Christmas time in Germany since the 8th century.
  • The Queen's Christmas speech was first televised in 1957.
  • Candy canes started out as straight white sticks of sugar candy used to decorate Christmas trees.
