8. Did You Know... |
In
conjunction with the release of the BlueScope
Steel’s Measurement Conversion Tool download,
the theme for facts this month is measurement.
Did you know:
- A bathometer is an instrument for indicating the
depth of the sea beneath a moving vessel
- A 'jiffy' is an actual unit of time for 1/100th
of a second
- The metal instrument used in shoe stores to measure
feet is called the Brannock device
- A
gnat's eye is a slang unit of distance. The eyes
of typical gnats tend to have diameters similar
in size to a hair's breadth - roughly 100-150
micrometers
- A hogshead is a unit of volume for liquids defined
to hold 2 barrels or 63 gallons. No one seems to
know how this unit got its unusual name
