- The origins of Valentine's Day trace back to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Held on February 15, Lupercalia honoured the gods Lupercus and Faunus, as well as the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.
- Approximately 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are sent each year, with around 85 percent of all valentines purchased by women.
- The oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum and was written in 1415. It was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.
- Symbols of Valentine's Day are: Cupid (The Roman God of Love), Doves, Love Birds, Roses, Hearts, Arrows and Lacy Doilies.
