8. Did You Know...

With January being the middle of summer and more people spending time outside, this month’s theme is Mosquitoes. Did you know:

  • Only female mosquitoes bite and take blood. She needs the protein from blood to develop her eggs. Male mosquitoes feed only on plant nectar.
  • A typical mosquito weighs about 2.5 milligrams
  • One mosquito species carries its eggs on its hind legs until hatching. The larvae then wait in the eggshell, popping out when the female lands and dips her legs in the water.
  • The larvae of some mosquito species contain an antifreeze like substance and can withstand being frozen in ice.
  • Mosquitoes find hosts by sight, by infrared radiation and by chemical signals.
