8. Did You Know...

Did you know that in July 1873, Ayres Rock (Uluru) was discovered by William Christie Goss, a young, little known explorer on his one and only expedition? In honour of this discovery of Australia’s largest monolith, the theme for this months’ trivia is Australian Landforms. Did you know:

  • The highest point on Australian Territory is actually Mawson's Peak, (located on Heard Island well south of the Australian continent, approaching the coast of Antarctica in the Southern Ocean); Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak on the Australian mainland.
  • Located just off the coast of southern Queensland, Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world (165,280 ha).
  • Apart from Antarctica, Australia is the driest continent in the world. About 35% of the continent receives so little rain it is effectively desert.
  • Ellenborough Falls, perched on the edge of the New England Tableland just north of Taree, is regarded as Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall.
  • Lake Eyre (Australia's largest lake) filled only three times last century, and Lake Torrens (Australia’s second largest salt lake) only once.
