This Month's Feature Article
1. Rural Hospital Just What the Doctor Ordered

A spectacular, semi-circular, roof plan in the newly completed Myrtleford & District Memorial Hospital has highlighted the adaptability of LYSAGHT LONGLINE® 305 cladding. By tapering the cladding, the unusual shape was achieved without resorting to segments or valley gutters. The AU$5.5 million upgrade of the hospital has resulted in vastly improved facilities crowned with an attractive steel roof. Read more here:

2. Smartsteel a Clever New Building System

Sydney builder Selwyn Reed has ended his 25-year search for the ultimate home building system. Reed has developed the builder-friendly Smartsteel building frame system, made from ZINCALUME® zinc/aluminium alloy-coated steel, to conquer the difficulties faced by the residential home building industry. Reed's Smartsteel building frame system includes features that achieve his goal of making the steel system more acceptable and appealing to builders and particularly to project home builders. 3. French Elegance Triumphs in South Australia

The Burgundy - a grand French-style home designed and constructed by Marshall Thompson Homes - has been named South Australia's Home of the Year for its spacious design and innovative construction techniques. Utilising a steel frame made from ZINCALUME® steel, the construction successfully negated the sloping site using a steel flooring system. "Marshall Thompson Homes has created a split-level display home at the prestigious Blackwood Park Estate which offers nothing less than five-star quality," the judges said. Read more here:

5. Wavelike Roof Mimics Surfing Curls

The Building Designers Association of Queensland recently awarded designer David Leth the south west regional award for the best individually designed home in the 201sq metre to 300sq metre category. Capturing panoramic ocean views in one direction and the mountain hinterland in the other, Leth's design harnessed the flexibility of COLORBOND® steel as roofing and walling to create an energy efficient layout. 6. Thermal Efficiency Saves Costs and the Environment

BHP Steel is supporting thermally efficient design with the launch of an information brochure entitled "Thermal Efficiency", which outlines the benefits and cost savings that can be achieved for an average family by using roofing made from COLORBOND® steel or ZINCALUME® steel. The brochure details important considerations such as building orientation, roofing material, insulation and roof shape. For more information, read on:

8. Did You Know...

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is snow. Did you know:

  • It takes about nine minutes for a snowflake to fall to Earth from a height of 328 metres.
  • The greatest snowfall in the world belongs to Mount Rainer in Washington, for the 1971-1972 season. During that time it accumulated over 31 metres of snow.
  • The largest snowflake ever observed was 38 cm wide. That was recorded in Montana, USA, on 28/1/1887.
  • Fresh snow is an excellent insulator - 25 cm of fresh snow provides insulation approximately equal to a 15 cm layer of fiberglass insulation.
  • It takes more energy to eat snow than it is worth - you use more energy eating it than you gain by hydrating (adding fluid to) your body
