1. Formula SAE: The Steel City Racer |
Light weight, strength and agility are the essential attributes of any competitive
racing car, and these qualities are also paramount in Formula SAE. The Steel City
Racer - designed, engineered and manufactured by the University of Wollongong
Racing Team (UOW Racing) - achieves these global prerequisites by combining a
number of unique design features with selection of the right material for each
specific application.

2. Smartsteel a Clever New Building System |
Sydney builder Selwyn
Reed has ended his 25-year search for the ultimate home building system. Reed
has developed the builder-friendly Smartsteel building frame system, made from
ZINCALUME® zinc/aluminium alloy-coated steel, to conquer the difficulties faced
by the residential home building industry. Reed's Smartsteel building frame system
includes features that achieve his goal of making the steel system more acceptable
and appealing to builders and particularly to project home builders. Read more

3. Steel Oasis Flourishes in the Hills |
The difficulties
of a severely sloping hill site have been overcome by T & R Homes' Simon Joiner
by developing an innovative steel base that required minimal site works and offered
maximum strength. The family home is built in rough hilly terrain, with one side
four metres from the ground and the other only 40 centimetres. To overcome this
problem, Mr Joiner erected a concrete combo system which used concrete footings
and GALVABOND® steel to create a solid and stable flooring system.

4. French Elegance Triumphs in South Australia |
The Burgundy - a
grand French-style home designed and constructed by Marshall Thompson Homes -
has been named South Australia's Home of the Year for its spacious design and
innovative construction techniques. Utilising a steel frame made from ZINCALUME®
steel, the construction successfully negated the sloping site using a steel flooring
system. "Marshall Thompson Homes has created a split-level display home at the
prestigious Blackwood Park Estate which offers nothing less than five-star quality,"
the judges said. Read more here:

5. A Steel Success over the Caboolture River |
Durable structural
steel provided the answer for Caboolture Shire Council in the design of a new
pedestrian/bikeway bridge over the Caboolture River. Providing a vital link between
Bellmere on the south side of the river, and Riverview Street on the north, the
bridge demonstrates the essential advantages of structural steel. Read more here:

6. BHP Steel Hot Rolled Strip |
Hot rolled strip
forms a cornerstone of the Australian manufacturing industry and has been used
in a wide range of engineering constructions. Manufactured on one of our two Hot
Strip Mills, it is available in a range of analysis, structural and formable grades.

7. BHP Steel Email Addresses are on the Move |
The Public Listing
of BHP Steel is fast approaching, and with it, comes a change to our email addresses.
The new format for most email addresses will be "firstname.surname@bhpsteel.com".
If you do have old email addresses in your email address books, now would be a
great time to update them. If in doubt, please email your BHP Steel contact at
their old address before the end of June to confirm their new email address, or
email us at our new address: bhpsteeldirect@bhpsteel.com.

8. Did You Know... |
Five completely trivial
but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is snow.
Did you know:
- It takes about nine
minutes for a snowflake to fall to Earth from a height of 328 metres.
- The greatest snowfall
in the world belongs to Mount Rainer in Washington, for the 1971-1972 season.
During that time it accumulated over 31 metres of snow.
- The largest snowflake
ever observed was 38 cm wide. That was recorded in Montana, USA, on 28/1/1887.
- Fresh snow is an
excellent insulator - 25 cm of fresh snow provides insulation approximately equal
to a 15 cm layer of fiberglass insulation.
- It takes more
energy to eat snow than it is worth - you use more energy eating it than you gain
by hydrating (adding fluid to) your body
