9. Did You Know...?

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is storms and weather. Did you know:

  • The average rainfall around the world is 102 centimetres per year.
  • In the world, an average of 16 million thunderstorms are formed per year.
  • The average hurricane generates energy roughly equivalent to 400 20-megaton bombs exploding in one day.
  • Tornadoes seem to be an almost-exclusive North American phenomena – they occur more often in the United States than anywhere else in the world.
  • To qualify as a hurricane, a storm must develop winds in excess of 121 kilometres per hour. Wind speeds as high as 354 kilometres per hour have been recorded.
