This Month's Feature Article
1. Modern Makeover for Historic Dwelling

An award winning South Australian architectural company has won praise for retaining the uniqueness of a historic dwelling while creating a more spacious, open plan home hailed for exemplary solar passive design. Troppo Architects chose framing, roofing and wall cladding made from ZINCALUME® zinc/aluminium alloy-coated steel for the home extensions in a design that incorporates thermally efficient walls and strategic roof overhangs:

2. New Display Home Showcases Roofing Trend

A multi-level house on the Gold Coast is the first display home built by Queensland specialist homebuilder Jasmac Constructions. The roof, made from COLORBOND® prepainted steel in Off White, is a major design feature of the home. More than 80%of the homes Jasmak Constructions builds each year now have a steel roof, reflecting the increase in demand seen since the company began using COLORBOND® steel in 2000. Read more here:

3. Steel Ideal for Outback Museum

One of the largest single span steel roofs in the Southern Hemisphere crowns the latest stage of the Qantas Founders Outback Museum, at Longreach, Queensland. The newly completed building, designed to resemble an aircraft hangar from ground level, sits next to the original hangar operated by Qantas when it began operations in the 1920s. Find out more about the on-site rollforming of COLORBOND® steel used to complete this project:

4. The Smart Way to be Green

National welfare provider, the Wesley Mission, has combined with the Housing Industry Association in a campaign to improve water and energy efficiency in residences throughout Australia. The two organisations are using the GreenSmart display village program to promote environmentally sustainable housing design. Rainwater tanks made from AQUAPLATE® steel have proved central to the strategy of recycling water around the home. Read more:

5. Award Winning Duo Produces Extravaganza of Colour and Style

An unusual three bedroom home is the result of an award winning combination of one of Victoria’s top building designers and top cabinet makers. The exterior cladding is a combination of textures and materials, featuring COLORBOND® prepainted steel in Birch colour at the top of the walls in contrast to bright yellow and blue panels. 7. Did You Know...

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is the Soccer World Cup. Did you know:

  • 194 country teams competed in the preliminary World Cup games (not including France, Korea and Japan who automatically qualified), with 777 games played in the lead up to the 2002 finals at Korea/Japan.
  • On average each of the games in the 1998 World Cup was watched by 522 million viewers. That is almost twice the population of the United States and 28 times that of Australia.
  • In the 16 World Cup competitions there have been only 7 countries who have won the cup. Brazil has won four times, Italy and Germany winning 3 times each, Uruguay and Argentina twice each and England and France have both won once.
  • The youngest person to score a goal in a world cup finals match is the famous Pele from Brazil in 1958 - he was only 17 years old.
  • The fastest goal to have been scored was scored in 1962 by Czechoslovakia's Vaclav Masek after only 16 seconds of play against Mexico.
