This Month's Feature Article
1. An Eye-Catching Style Through Canberra's Good Offices

An innovative office block in the heart of Canberra has met an exacting design brief by using COLORBOND® steel in the colour stone. Local firm Dowse Norwood Architects (DNA) designed the single storey, 1500 square metre structure in Deakin, ACT, to house the Australian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. Read more here:

2. Shapely Curves Wrap Swim Centre

Lightweight steel roofing has helped build a world class swimming pool facility in Hobart at a fraction of the cost of similar swimming centres in other major capital cities. The AU$13.5 million Hobart Aquatic Centre features a design incorporating curved roof forms in LYSAGHT SPANDEK HI-TEN® sheeting which contributes significantly to the building's aesthetic appeal. 3. Steel Ideal for Outback Museum

One of the largest single span steel roofs in the Southern Hemisphere crowns the latest stage of the Qantas Founders Outback Museum, at Longreach, Queensland. The newly completed building, designed to resemble an aircraft hangar from ground level, sits next to the original hangar operated by Qantas when it began operations in the 1920s. Find out more about the on-site rollforming of COLORBOND® steel used to complete this project:

4. Queensland Rail Mainline Upgrade

Queensland Rail has undertaken a massive AU$590 million capital investment program in rail infrastructure in Queensland, referred to as the Main Line Upgrade (MLU) project. The result was improved travelling times from Brisbane to Cairns and increased competitiveness of rail passenger and rail freight transport in Queensland, with the line's capacity increased by 25% and freight travel time reduced from 40 hours to 27 hours. Read more about the bridgework that made this possible:

5. The Smart Way to be Green

National welfare provider, the Wesley Mission, has combined with the Housing Industry Association in a campaign to improve water and energy efficiency in residences throughout Australia. The two organisations are using the GreenSmart display village program to promote environmentally sustainable housing design. Rainwater tanks made from AQUAPLATE® steel have proved central to the strategy of recycling water around the home. Read more:

6. Award Winning Duo Produces Extravaganza of Colour and Style

An unusual three bedroom home is the result of an award winning combination of one of Victoria’s top building designers and top cabinet makers. The exterior cladding is a combination of textures and materials, featuring COLORBOND® prepainted steel in Birch colour at the top of the walls in contrast to bright yellow and blue panels. 8. Did You Know...

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is the Soccer World Cup. Did you know:

  • 194 country teams competed in the preliminary World Cup games (not including France, Korea and Japan who automatically qualified), with 777 games played in the lead up to the 2002 finals at Korea/Japan.
  • On average each of the games in the 1998 World Cup was watched by 522 million viewers. That is almost twice the population of the United States and 28 times that of Australia.
  • In the 16 World Cup competitions there have been only 7 countries who have won the cup. Brazil has won four times, Italy and Germany winning 3 times each, Uruguay and Argentina twice each and England and France have both won once.
  • The youngest person to score a goal in a world cup finals match is the famous Pele from Brazil in 1958 - he was only 17 years old.
  • The fastest goal to have been scored was scored in 1962 by Czechoslovakia's Vaclav Masek after only 16 seconds of play against Mexico.
