At Home Among the Gum Trees

A large prestige home under construction in Melbourne has opened a window for its occupants on the natural beauty of adjacent Heritage listed bushland populated by koalas and kangaroos. The open plan design was optimised by using purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel for structural framing under the floor and in the roof. The purlins increase the structural strength of the home and reduce the number of walls required, to maximise the living area. Read more here:

Purlins Aid BHP Steel Lysaght Expansion

Building products rollformer BHP Steel Lysaght is using a move into new Victorian production facilities to showcase the performance of purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel. Cold formed, galvanised purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel have minimum yield strengths 60 percent greater than hot rolled steel purlins. This allows lighter sections to be used and fixing times to be minimised by using self drilling, self tapping screws. Find out more here:

5. Fencing Warranty Provides Peace of Mind

The new LYSAGHT® Complete Fence Warranty is designed to offer home owners unprecedented peace of mind when choosing a stylish new steel boundary fence. The warranty complements all existing warranties which apply to COLORBOND® prepainted steel used in all of its fencing systems to provide the greatest warranty protection ever offered to Australian consumers. 6. Steel Offers Strength, Style and Security

Regal Homes principal Boris Stoka has completed his latest display home with a roof made from COLORBOND® steel in the colour Slate Grey to highlight the practical benefits of steel in preference to other types of roofing. The Manor display home on the corner of Sutton Road and the Federal Highway in NSW is a substantial family home designed specifically for large blocks of land. 7. Country Retreat Offers Modern Style

The architecturally designed High Gate Country Retreat is a contemporary open plan house featuring roofing and wall cladding made from ZINCALUME® steel. It can accommodate six people and is entirely self-contained with three double bedrooms, two bathrooms, air conditioning and wood fire. For more:

8. Steel Truss Creates More Attic Space

A novel steel roof truss system developed to create usable space inside a roof cavity has allowed a Sydney architectural company to create a large rumpus room at minimal cost. Rob Hale of the YBC Group is using steel building frame technology to convert a conventional fibro home into a spacious two storey dwelling in the style of mid-western American architecture. Speed of erection, design flexibility and the structural integrity of the framing system made from ZINCALUME® steel, were major factors in YBC's decision. Find out more here:

9. Did You Know...

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is chocolate. Did you know:

  • A single chocolate chip provides sufficient food energy for an adult to walk about 50 metres, hence, it would take about 875,000 chocolate chips fo fuel an around-the-world hike.
  • Chocolate syrup was used for blood in the famous 45 second shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "Psycho" which actually took 7 days to shoot.
  • Chocolate has over 500 flavor components, more than twice the amount found in strawberry and vanilla.
  • Chocolate can be lethal to dogs because it contains Theobromine, an ingredient that stimulates the cardiac muscle and the central nervous system.
  • The Swiss consume more chocolate per capita than any other country in the world - more than 10kg per person per year on average.
