Home Among the Gum Trees |
A large prestige home under construction in Melbourne
has opened a window for its occupants on the natural
beauty of adjacent Heritage listed bushland populated
by koalas and kangaroos. The open plan design
was optimised by using purlins made from GALVASPAN®
steel for structural framing under the floor and
in the roof. The purlins increase the structural
strength of the home and reduce the number of
walls required, to maximise the living area. Read

Building
products rollformer BHP Steel Lysaght is using
a move into new Victorian production facilities
to showcase the performance of purlins made from
GALVASPAN® steel. Cold formed, galvanised purlins
made from GALVASPAN® steel have minimum yield
strengths 60 percent greater than hot rolled steel
purlins. This allows lighter sections to be used
and fixing times to be minimised by using self
drilling, self tapping screws. Find out more here:

5 . Stately
Heritage House Sees the Light |
Woollahra
Municipal Council has used ecologically sustainable
design principles to create naturally lit semi
underground office space beneath a building of
great heritage significance. The new AU$10 million,
2000 square metre facility is below the historic
Redleaf House at Double Bay, Sydney. The Council
chose the winning architectural plan following
an expression of interest that attracted entries
from 67 architectural firms, of which seven were
selected to enter a competition. For more details:

6. Trendy Warehouse Living on the Gold Coast |
Delfin Warehouses at Varsity Lakes on the Gold
Coast have taken the trend of converting old warehouses
into contemporary residences one step further
by building completely new warehouse style accommodation
from the ground up. Each warehouse combines the
character of historic warehouses with the benefits
of a new home on a separate block and title. Delfin
Lend Lease has sold more than 20 warehouses in
less than six months - double the number of sales
originally predicted. For more information:

8. Steel Truss Creates More Attic Space |
A
novel steel roof truss system developed to create
usable space inside a roof cavity has allowed
a Sydney architectural company to create a large
rumpus room at minimal cost. Rob Hale of the YBC
Group is using steel building frame technology
to convert a conventional fibro home into a spacious
two storey dwelling in the style of midwestern
American architecture. Speed of erection, design
flexibility and the structural integrity of the
framing system made from ZINCALUME® steel, were
major factors in YBC's decision. Find out more

9. Did You Know... |
Five
completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your
mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is
chocolate. Did you know:
- A
single chocolate chip provides sufficient food
energy for an adult to walk about 50 metres,
hence, it would take about 875,000 chocolate
chips fo fuel an around-the-world hike.
- Chocolate
syrup was used for blood in the famous 45 second
shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "Psycho"
which actually took 7 days to shoot.
- Chocolate
has over 500 flavor components, more than twice
the amount found in strawberry and vanilla.
- Chocolate
can be lethal to dogs because it contains Theobromine,
an ingredient that stimulates the cardiac muscle
and the central nervous system.
- The
Swiss consume more chocolate per capita than
any other country in the world - more than 10kg
per person per year on average.
