2. Looking for an Old Steel in Focus Article? |
It
can be a frustrating experience trying to locate
an article when you can't remember which issue
of a periodical it appeared in. BHP Steel therefore
brings you the Steel in Focus Archive - putting
all the articles from all the issues at your fingertips.
If you are involved in heavy engineering, manufacturing
and infrastructure, the archive is an essential
reference. Browse the articles here:

3. PIPESTEEL - A Million Tonnes of History |
From its Port Kembla
Works in New South Wales, BHP Steel Limited has supplied state of the art raw
coil feed for the manufacture of high strength, high quality pipe for the oil
& gas industry in Australia, for nearly four decades. This steel is now known
as PIPESTEEL. Read about the history, the uses and the technology of PIPESTEEL

5. Local Quality Beats Global Challenge |
Australia
has beaten England again - not on the sporting
field - but in servicing the needs of a global
resource company. Melbourne based Apollo Engineering
has recently renewed its contract to manufacture
hot metal vessels for the Pasminco lead smelting
plant at Port Pirie in South Australia. Long established
as an exporter of boiler drums all over the world,
Apollo won the Pasminco contract four years ago
against stiff international competition, and extended
this relationship further in the first quarter,
winning the contract for a further year. Read

6. Lasers Keep Family Firm at the Cutting Edge |
Making
the most of new technology is often a question
of getting the timing right, and a Sydney metalworking
company has shown that the best time may well
be when the old technology is still working just
fine. W. H. Williams and Sons was already doing
very nicely in 1997, when it decided the time
was right to install a laser cutting machine in
its Silverwater workshops. A second laser cutter
followed in 2001, and the two machines have more
than lived up to expectations. Read more:

7. Modular Power Poles Defy Bushfire Hazard |
A new development
in modular galvanised steel power poles has established the potential for steel
poles as a more durable, practical and convenient alternative to old fashioned
wooden poles for high voltage infrastructure. Energy Australia is trialling modular
galvanised steel poles, jointly developed by Ingal in Newcastle and BHP Steel
in Port Kembla, on its high voltage 22kV infrastructure in the remote Putty area
of NSW. For more information:

8. Run Lean Without Running Onto the Rocks |
Lean manufacturing
is a concept that many people think is only for mass production industries
but nothing could be further from the truth. Being lean means eliminating waste,
and eliminating waste is good for any business. The whole idea of lean manufacturing
is continuous product flow through the entire value stream. Inventory is seen
as equivalent to cycle time and reduced cycle times and inventories will
force waste to be exposed and eliminated. Find out more about lean manufacturing

9. Did You Know... |
Five
completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your
mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is
chocolate. Did you know:
- A
single chocolate chip provides sufficient food
energy for an adult to walk about 50 metres,
hence, it would take about 875,000 chocolate
chips fo fuel an around-the-world hike.
- Chocolate
syrup was used for blood in the famous 45 second
shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "Psycho"
which actually took 7 days to shoot.
- Chocolate
has over 500 flavor components, more than twice
the amount found in strawberry and vanilla.
- Chocolate
can be lethal to dogs because it contains Theobromine,
an ingredient that stimulates the cardiac muscle
and the central nervous system.
- The
Swiss consume more chocolate per capita than
any other country in the world - more than 10kg
per person per year on average.
