6. Fast Facts... |
- The Sun is sometimes referred to by its Latin name Sol or by its Greek name Helios
- Its astrological and astronomical symbol is a circle with a point at its centre
- About 74% of the Sun's mass is hydrogen, 25% is helium, and the rest is made up of trace quantities of heavier elements
- The sun has a spectral class of G2V. "G2" means that it has a surface temperature of approximately 5,200 degrees Celsius giving it a white colour, which because of atmospheric scattering appears yellow.
- The "V" suffix indicates that the Sun, like most stars, is a main sequence star, which means that it generates its energy by nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium and is in a state of hydrostatic balance, neither contracting nor expanding over time.
