This Month's Feature Article
1. Determine Plate Weldability

Although most grades of xlerplate® are readily weldable, an incorrect choice of welding conditions may lead to unnecessary difficulty. This detailed article provides information on the weldability of a range of BHP Steel xlerplate® grades, with recommendations for the control of heat affected zone hardness and measures of protection against heat affected zone cracking, through the correct combination of welding energy (heat) input and preheat for the welding process concerned. 2. Fusion Weld Tanks Wins U.S. Licence

Industrial manufacturer Fusion Weld Tanks has secured a licence through the Steel Tank Institute (STI) in the US to manufacture Double Wall Permatanks for the Australian and Asian markets - a win for both the local industry and steel in general. The double wall tanks are used by major oil companies and chemical companies as underground fuel tanks in service stations, chemical storage and fuel storage in airports. Read more:

3. Selecting The Right Grade For Laser Cutting

Laser cutting of steel has become increasingly widespread in Australia in the last few years, and the successful use of this technology depends at least partly on selecting the right grade of steel to be cut. It offers the advantages of speed, precision and quality of cut over the more conventional forms of cutting. Learn more about the many benefits of laser cutting:

4. Pier Redundancy - The Vital Ingredient

The concept of the pier redundant bridge requires that the bridge superstructure does not collapse with any one pier is removed. Current developments in bridge design standards could significantly enhance the safety of road bridges above railway tracks, where both road and rail users are protected by the benefits of pier redundancy. Learn more about these recent developments:

5. Cabrini Hospital Built On The Strength Of BONDEK®

A cost effective and rapid steel formwork system has ensured that a AU$25 million expansion program at one of Australia's largest private hospitals will be completed in record time. The new operating theatres and a new car park at Melbourne's Cabrini Hospital will expand the centre's comprehensive medical services. Structural engineer Anthony Trantino from construction management firm Construction Engineering said using LYSAGHT BONDEK® saved Cabrini Hospital time and money. For more information:

7. New LYSAGHT CUSTOM BLUE ORB® Information

LYSAGHT CUSTOM BLUE ORB® is the traditional corrugated roofing profile, designed specifically for curving. Most commonly used on curved roofing and walling in industrial, commercial and residential applications, the extra ductility of LYSAGHT CUSTOM BLUE ORB® allows for easy curving without distortion. New information - spans, capacity tables - is now available for LYSAGHT CUSTOM BLUE ORB® on the BHP Steel website. To read more:

8. Did You Know...

Five completely trivial but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is plants. Did you know:

  • An average mature oak tree sheds approximately 700,000 leaves in the autumn.
  • The bark of the redwood tree is fireproof. Fires in redwood forests take place inside the trees.
  • In one year, the average tree gives off enough oxygen to allow four people to breathe for a year.
  • The Coco de mer, or double coconut palm of the Seychelles, bears the largest seed in the plant kingdom, weighing up to 27 kilograms
  • The deadliest plant in the world is the castor bean plant. It is estimated that the protein, ricin, found in the castor bean plant is 6,000 times more poisonous than cyanide.
