7. Did You Know... |
Five completely trivial
but fun facts to boggle your mind. The theme for this edition of 'S.O.S' is measurement.
Did you know:
- The one-foot measurement
is based on one-third of the length of the arm of King Henry I (1068-1135) of
England.
-
A mile on the ocean
and a mile on land are not the same distance. On the ocean, a nautical mile measures
1,853 metres. A land or statute mile is 1,609 metres.
- Ancient Greeks originally determined the fathom, a measurement of 6 feet (1.83
metres), by the length of a sailor's outstretched arms.
- A "hairsbreadth away" is 1/48 of an inch (0.53 millimetres)
- "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" is the equivalent of 111,100 kilometres under
the sea. If taken literally, as the Earth is only 12,756 km in diameter, this
puts Jules Verne's submarine a third of the way to the moon!
