Can I use fencing made from COLORBOND® steel close to the ocean?
Fencing made from COLORBOND® steel is not warranted when installed within one kilometre of marine influences.
How can I get paint to match the COLORBOND® steel colours?
All the major paint manufacturing companies have colour matching codes to produce paint that will match to the COLORBOND® steel colours. Simply quote the trademarked COLORBOND® steel colour name and they should be able to provide you with paint to match, allowing you to paint trims and accessories to fit in with your COLORBOND® steel products. For further detail on overpainting (including touch-ups), Download Technical Bulletin TB 02 - Overpainting and Restoration of COLORBOND® prepainted steel sheet. Please be aware that when matching paint using new colour codes to older weathered material, there could be a difference in the colour due to fading of the existing product.
Where can I buy your product?
You can find your closest suppliers using our Find a Supplier.
What is the price of COLORBOND® steel? Can you give me a quote for my house or project?
Prices will vary depending on the manufacturer you choose. Bluescope Steel makes COLORBOND® steel as flat sheet rolled into coils. It's our rollformer customers who turn this 'raw' material into the various profiles and products you're familiar with. Please use our Find a Supplier to find a rollformer in your area who will be able to help you with information on pricing of their products.
Where can I get a sample of your colours?
You can order colour samples on our Brochure and Swatches page, or Find a Supplier.
Why can't I find any profiles, dimensions, spans on your site?
While Bluescope Steel makes COLORBOND® steel, it's our rollforming customers who turn it into the various steel products you're familiar with, such as roof cladding, guttering and fencing panels. There are many rollformers out there, each supplying different products with different product specifications. You can Find a Supplier in your area who will be able to help you with the types of profiles they have available and other product information.
Can I put lattice on top of an existing fence?
Some rollformers produce lattice for this purpose. Please Find a Supplier.
What sealants (silicone) can I use with COLORBOND® steel?
Neutral Cure silicone rubber sealants are the only sealants recommended for use with COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel. Look for the words "Neutral Cure" on the sealant cartridge to make sure. View our page: Select a sealant for the job.
What fasteners should I use with COLORBOND® steel?
Please view our page Choose fasteners for cladding.
Can I paint COLORBOND® steel?
Yes. But before you do, clean the surface. This can be done using a mop or soft bristle brush with non-ionic detergent (such as kitchen detergent) and water. The surface should then be hosed down thoroughly with water and allowed to dry.
If the surface is new, it may contain some residual lubricants from the roll forming process. These should also be removed using the procedure outlined above. If possible, new surfaces can be sanded lightly to enhance paint adhesion. This is not required on older, weathered COLORBOND® steel.
Once the surface is clean, you can directly overpaint it using two coats (preferably) of a good quality water-based exterior acrylic. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions. If the steel is being used to catch drinking water, also check with the manufacturer that the paint is suitable for this purpose.
It's important to note that overpainting COLORBOND® steel will void any warranties issued by BlueScope Steel. Should, for any reason, overpainting be undertaken on behalf of and under instruction from BlueScope Steel, then a future warranty (if any) position will be negotiated between the customer and BlueScope Steel.
